Within the Sparkling Science project "NaturVerrückt" a smartphone app was designed for collecting phenological observations. Pupils of five agricultural schools entered their phenological observations via this app into the phehological data base. Within the project "NaturKalender" its functionality will be extended and species added. Potential target groups will be contacted for recruiting new observers in order to increase the densitiy of phenological observations in Austria. Citizen scientists will be invited to share their observations, increase their observational abilities and their knowledge on the effect of climate change on plants and animals and thereby sharpen their environmental awareness. Near real time graphical displays of the phenological observations on the phenowatch website will inform the public on the current developmental stage of the vegetation. The results of "Naturkalender" will be presented at conferences and published in reviewed scientific journal.
